IREM Para 214(i): Residency Period for Railway Promotion Clarified

🚆 Railway Circular UpdateBy Study Keeda

Railway Board has clarified the operation of Para 214(i) of IREM Volume I regarding completion of the prescribed residency period for promotion to a higher grade.

Main clarification

The prescribed two years of service should be completed within the period for which vacancies are assessed. The clarification refers to a vacancy assessment period of 15 months for selection posts and 12 months for non-selection posts, under the applicable instructions.

What candidates should understand

  • Eligibility is connected with the relevant vacancy assessment period.
  • Selection and non-selection posts use different assessment periods.
  • The clarification states that past cases decided otherwise need not be reopened.
  • The notification, cut-off date and applicable Establishment instructions must be read together.

Importance for LDCE and departmental selections

Residency conditions are a frequent source of eligibility questions in promotional examinations. Candidates should avoid treating the two-year condition as an isolated rule and should examine how the notified vacancy period is calculated.
